Covid-19 and School Closure

Due to the ongoing Pandemic of the Covid-19 virus, all schools will remain closed until at least the 5th May’20, after the May holiday break.

School work for completion at Home

Updated school work for completion at home whilst schools remain closed, is available for all classes on our school website (www.kilgarriffens.ie) under the heading ‘Home Work 20th April onwards’ on the HOME page.

 

Please do what you can of the work set, with your children, without it causing undue stress or extra anxiety to either children or parents.

We are very aware that each families’ situation is different & this isolated, remote learning is not ideal for anyone. A lot of parents are trying to work from home, not everyone has adequate numbers of laptops/tablets,  available printers, strong enough broadband or may not be in full health to be able to monitor school work at this time.

and we will do our best to assist with what we can.

 

Please get your children to do what school work you can manage, as even a little is better than nothing. Allow them time for fun with lots of both indoor & outdoor play with not too much ‘screen time’!!!

 

Seesaw distance learning Ap

We have set up the ‘Seesaw’ a distance learning Ap for helping children from 2nd to 6th Class to stay connected more easily to their teachers. This should be easy for them to use (provided they have internet and a device), should they need any help with their work or would like to share what they are doing with their teacher for comment or correction.

RTE 2 School Hub Programme

RTE 2 School Hub continues to broadcast school lessons for one hour each day from 11am to 12noon on RTE 2 television for all primary school children. The programme will also be available on RTE Player and supporting worksheets and other material will be available via RTE.ie/learn.

Home/ School Activities

RTE School Programme

Starting Monday 30th March’20, RTE will broadcast school lessons for one hour each day from 11am to 12noon on RTE 2 television for all primary school children. The programme will also be available on RTE Player and supporting worksheets and other material will be available via RTE.ie/learn.

School Closure

As per Government announcement today, all schools are closed from today Thursday 12th March’20 for the next 2 weeks. School reopens Monday 30th March’20 unless further updated. Keep in touch with the National news.

 

Fun Family Bingo Fundraiser

Many thanks to everyone who supported our Bingo fundraiser last Sunday by attending, helping organise, donating prizes, cash & baking, selling tickets & tidy up afterwards. All was greatly appreciated & a grand total of €1,863 was raised.

We are hoping to use some of this to finish our ‘Playscape’ area for the children over the coming months.

Engineers Week

This week is Engineers Week and all classes are enjoying lots of different engineering tasks & challenges including our visiting ‘Bee Bots’, designing towers & parachutes, making engineering kits, etc. Lots of budding engineers in the making!!

 

Arc Tree Planting

Today we had our Arc Group back in school working with all the classes, getting some young trees planted in our school grounds. Many thanks to them and to those that supplied the trees as part of the 2,000 trees being planted in Clonakilty area over the coming months.

 

Supervalu Flowers for Bees Campaign

Supervalu are currently sponsoring & supporting a campaign to increase the plants in our community that will support the survival of our bees which are becoming increasingly endangered. They have supplied us with wild flower seeds & information posters about all the different bees, which flowering plants they like & need as well as a collection board which will display lots of information cards. These cards can be collected in store when shopping & Supervalu are having a €50.000 draw for schools who complete their collection board. If you shop in Supervalu, please collect your ‘Bee Cards’ & send them into school for our entry & chance to win. Thank You.

 

Tag Rugby Lessons

Tag Rugby lessons (2nd to 6th Class) started yesterday. These will continue every Wednesday for the next few weeks.

                                                                                            

Aldi Rugby Stickers

Keep collecting Aldi Rugby stickers and send them into school for our wall chart collection. Available in store until the end of April’20. Thank you to all who have sent them in already, our poster is filling up nicely.

Week 23 (05/03/20)

World Book Day

World Book Day was enjoyed by all today as everyone, including the staff had an opportunity to dress up as a book character from one of their favourite books. Well done to all for a great creative effort. Lots of stories were read & book related activities were completed, adding to the fun. Everyone got a special sticker as well as a World Book Day token. This can be swopped for their choice of book, from a special selection of books in the local book shops, while stock lasts.

 

Family Bingo School Fundraiser

Reminder our Annual Family Bingo will take place this Sunday 8th March at 3pm in the Parochial Hall. This is a fun afternoon suitable for all the family & friends. Lots of cash prizes available as well as a Raffle. Baking is needed to serve with refreshments. Please can all families contribute towards this. If unable to attend, donations of baking or prizes can be dropped into school up to 3pm on Friday. Looking forward to seeing everyone there.

 

SPAR FAI Primary Soccer Tournament

We are entering 2 teams in this 5-a-side Schools tournament for the first time this year.

The first round of the competition will be held next Fri 13th March’20 on the Astroturf pitch in Ahamilla Sports Grounds, Clonakilty. All team players will need shin guards & suitable sports gear. School sports t-shirts will be provided for matches. Players & all of the Senior classroom (players & supporters) will need to be dropped to Ahamilla GAA grounds by 9:30am & collected again from there at 2:15pm.

School buses will facilitate those normally on them.

 

Soccer Coaching

Many thanks to Caroline Buttimer for coming into school to give our Soccer teams some extra coaching before their tournament next Friday 13th.

 

Tag Rugby Lessons

Tag Rugby lessons (2nd to 6th Class) will commence from next Wed 11th March’20. These will be coached by Finbar from Clonakilty Rugby Club every Wed until Easter, followed by a primary schools tournament after Easter at the Rugby Club.

Fair Trade Week

This week is Fair Trade Week & in conjunction with this we had a visit from Clonakilty Chocolate Chocolatier Alisson Roberts this afternoon and learned about chocolate making as well as supporting cocoa bean & other farmers by Fair Trade. 

 

Roald Dahl in the Everyman Theatre

Tomorrow Fri 28th Feb’20 all children from Infants to 4th class will travel by bus to The Everyman Palace to attend ‘Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes’. We will leave school by 10:15am & will be back before school closes at 3pm, therefore Infant collection 3pm tomorrow instead of usual 2pm. €10 per child for ticket & school will fund the bus.

 

World Book Day

World Book Day is next Thursday 4th March’20. To mark this occasion, all children are invited ‘to dress up as book characters’ from one of their favourite books. To encourage some creativity, especially in the older classes, there will be some prizes distributed on the day.

Lots of book and reading related activities will take place on the day, as well as the older children reading to the younger ones during the day.

Whist Drive Fundraiser

Many thanks to Kilgarriffe Parish for holding a Whist Drive in aid of our school last Monday 24th Feb’20 in the Parochial Hall. Many thanks also to those who donated Raffle Prizes & baking and who came to help on the evening. A total of €742 was raised & it was great to see some of our older pupils there playing, after learning to play ‘Whist’ this winter.

 

Used Clothing Collection

Many thanks to everyone who contributed to yesterdays Cash 4 Clothes Used Clothing collection. We had over 100 bags totalling 725kg, almost double our last collection.

Infants (No swimming) €60 full fee per child.

Aldi are running another promotion for 2 lucky schools to win €50,000 for sports facilities. We are collecting stickers to enter again, from Jan 31st until the 24th April’20. Anyone shopping in Aldi, please collect your stickers at checkout & send into school to add to our collection poster displayed in the Computer room.

 

Whist Drive Fundraiser Monday 24th Feb’20

Kilgarriffe Parish are holding a Whist Drive in aid of our school on Monday 24th Feb’20 at 9pm in the Parochial Hall. Any ‘Whist’ players are very welcome to attend to take part. Donations of Raffle Prizes & Baking (Cake, buns, biscuits & sandwiches) to serve for refreshments are needed from our school families. Raffle prizes can be sent into school & any willing bakers, please let us know by text on school mobile.

Baking can be delivered to school on Mon 24th or directly to the hall that evening.

West Corks Got Talent Kids Auditions

‘West Cork’s Got Talent’ is a fundraiser in aid of Jack & Friends Centre for Autism based in Bandon supporting 160 families in West Cork living with Autism.

If your child (6-12 yrs) has a ‘Talent’ & would like to participate, Clonakilty Auditions are taking place on Sat 15th Feb’20 @12 noon in the Clonakilty Hotel. Parent or Guardian must be present to confirm participation consent & €20 per entry.

10 finalist for the Juniors Competition (6 Years – 12 Years) will be chosen from the Clonakilty Auditions.

Winner of the Final Show on March 14th will take home a prize of €500.

 

Parents Internet Safety & Cyberbullying Talk

Primary School Credit Union Quiz

Well done to the 2 teams who represented our school last Sunday in the Credit Union Primary Schools Quiz at Fernhill House Hotel.

 

Author Visit

Author Olive Mooney who has written a ghost series of Novels for Primary School children called 'The Chronicles of Cadaver College' visited 2nd to 6th Class last Monday afternoon.

The children greatly enjoyed her visit & we have purchased her books for the library in both the Middle & Senior Classrooms.

 

Junior Entrepreneur Programme

Last Tuesday 5th & 6th Class put forward their business ideas to the ‘Dragons’ (Ian, Galiya & Sheila), as part of the Junior Entrepreneur Programme. All groups presented very well, with the ‘Pizza idea’ winning overall.

We look forward to Pizza for lunch in the weeks ahead. Well done 5th & 6th.

A special thanks to Ian, Galiya & Sheila for doing a great job as ‘The dragons’, asking some very challenging questions to our budding entrepreneurs!!

Primary School Credit Union Quiz

The Annual Primary Schools Credit Union Quiz takes place this Sunday 2nd February’20 in Fernhill House Hotel from 3-5pm

Best of luck to our two school teams. Team members please be at Fernhill by 2:45pm at the latest.

No Uniform required & NO MOBILE PHONES allowed during Quiz. If you bring one, please ensure you give it to Miss. Buttimer before the Quiz starts.

Parents please collect children after Quiz at 5pm.

Author Visit to School

Next Monday 3rd Feb’20the children in 2nd to 6th Class will have a visit from Author Olive Mooney who has written a

ghost series of Novels for Primary School children called 'The Chronicles of Cadaver College' aimed at 8-12 year olds.

She will read to the children & give them some creative writing tips during her visit.

Children have all received a flyer about purchasing some books, should they wish to, but there is no obligation to do so.

Junior Entrepreneur Programme

This year 5th & 6th Class will take part in the Junior Entrepreneur Programme.

They will put forward their ideas before the ‘Dragons’ next Tuesday 4th February’20.

Parent/ Teacher Meetings

Reminder School will finish for all children at 12noon next Thursday 30thJanuary to facilitate Parent Teacher Meetings.

Parent/ teacher meetings will take place over two days:

Mon 27th Jan’20 from 3:15 -5:30pm and

Thurs 30th Jan’20 from 1pm onwards.

Timetable has been distributed to all.

The Annual Primary Schools Credit Union Quiz takes place on Sunday 2nd Feb’20 in Fernhill Hotel at 3pm.

Kilgarriffe NS Enrolment

Enrolment is open for our school for next Sept’20 since 15th Jan’20.

Enrolment forms should be sought, completed & returned to school by 15th Feb’20.

After this date the BOM will offer places to those wishing to start in Sept’20, following our enrolment policy.

Please spread the word to any friends, family, neighbours, etc. who may be interested in enrolling a child in our school for next Sept’20, especially for Junior Infants. Spaces may be limited in some classes as we strive to keep our numbers in each classroom as manageable as possible, therefore early enrolment is advisable.

 

Our School Open Day will be on Friday 7th Feb’20 from 10am to 3pm. All are welcome to visit our school that day, especially if interested in enrolling a child in the next few years.

 

Board Of Management (BOM) Annual Extra Curricular Payment

The second half of this payment (€55 per child) is now due for all families who haven’t already paid this in full. Please can this be sent into school before the February midterm break. Thank you to those who have already contributed in full. There are still several families that owe the full amount:

ie. €110 per child (1st to 6th Class) / €60 per child (Infants as NO Swimming lessons)

Road Works for Footpaths

There will be some disruption along the Old Timoleague Road up past our school for the next few weeks as progress is finally

in motion to improve & install footpaths.

Please be very careful, allowing extra time especially at drop off & collection times and adhere to the traffic lights for everyone’s safety.

 

Parent/ Teacher Meetings

Parent/ teacher meetings will take place over two days:

Mon 27th Jan’20 from 3:30 -5:30pm and

Thurs 30th Jan’20 from 1pm onwards.

School will finish for all children at 12noon on Thursday 30th.

Credit Union Quiz

Children from 2nd to 6th Class will take part in practice quizzes & 2 teams of 4 children will be chosen to represent our school.

After this date the BOM will offer places to those wishing to start in Sept’20, following our enrolment policy.

Please spread the word to any friends, family, neighbours, etc. who may be interested in enrolling a child in our school for next Sept’20,

‘The Secrets to Effective Parenting’ is a 6 week course presented by Bernadette Ruane & Rioghnach Cantwell.

Suitable for Parents, Teachers & Youth Workers. Starts 22nd Jan’20, 7-9pm at Twig, Spillers Lane, Clonakilty.

Welcome Back

Welcome back to everyone and hope you all had a lovely, restful Christmas break.

Wishing you and your families a very ‘Happy New Year’ for 2020.

 

Food Dudes & Healthy Lunch Policy

As a new term begins, reminder of our ‘Healthy Lunch’ policy in school, with the assistance of you the parents’ to cut back on sugary treats, keeping these to ONE small treat on Fridays. As part of this, the children are being encouraged to continue the ‘Food Dudes Programme’ including some fruit & veg in their lunch box each day. Each classroom has an awards chart, on which each child gets a tick for the fruit & veg they eat each day, working towards a series of award certificates.

As an additional incentive, when every child in their classroom has reached their Silver Certificate, the class will all be rewarded with a special ‘Smoothie Day’.

 

Parent/ Teacher Meetings

This year Parent/ teacher meetings will take place over two days:

Health Issues

Please check all heads for Head lice & treat appropriately with treatment shampoo immediately & repeat in 10 days time!

There have been several outbreaks of ‘Mumps’ in Clonakilty Community particularly in the teenage age group. Please be aware of this if any of your children are unwell or are not vaccinated.
