Sports Day & New Infants Teddy Bear’s Picnic

Both events took place today, making the most of the good weather while it lasts. Hope everyone enjoyed both events. Lovely to meet some of our new pupils for next year & to have some past pupils back also at Sports Day.

 

Student of the Year

Congratulations to Sarah Buttimer (6th Class) who received this special prize today.

 

6th Class Graduation

Sixth Class Graduation will take place next Tuesday 25th June from 10:30am to 12 noon. All sixth Class Parents & siblings are welcome to attend. All school pupils are to be in FULL UNIFORM on Tuesday please. Refreshments at 11:15am.

Reminder to 5th Class parents, that it’s your turn to send in some treats please for this.

All children get their Summer Holidays at 12 noon.

 

Good bye Sixth Class

Best wishes to all our 6th Class pupils on their transition to secondary school. We will miss you all and don’t forget our doors are always open if you ever want to call in and have a chat, complete work experience or for any other reason. Always welcome.

 

6th Class Parents – School Transition Webinar

This webinar takes place free of charge tonight Thurs 20th June at 7pm, by the Planet Youth Project. It’s an information session for parents that will assist them in supporting their children transitioning from Primary to Secondary school. School Reports

School reports will be available tomorrow Fri 21st June’24 on Aladdin for all parents to view. If anyone is having difficulty viewing, please let us know. Thank You.

 

School Books

Once again for the next school year the Department of Education is providing free school books to all Primary School children for 2024/25. There is a stationary list on Aladdin for all classes to purchase, name and bring to school on their first day back.

 

Moths (night time butterflies!)

Many thanks to Karl Woods who came into school this week & installed a moth trap overnight. Then on Tuesday he returned & showed the children all the different types of moths captured & explained all about them, before releasing them to the wild again…. fascinating.

 

Playscape Funding

Great news…. drum roll!!....we were one of only 24 schools nationwide (only school in Cork) to get funding for our play scape. We will be awarded €10k as part of a pilot project to link physical activity, Math, History & Science.

If you would like to be part of the play scape volunteers group to help move this project forward and further play scape projects over the line, please let Sheila know.

 

Congratulations

Congratulations to Conan O’Donovan, our GAA coach who was a successful candidate in the recent election of the new Major of Clonakilty. He will be Major for 2025-2026.

Courtmacsherry RNLI Open Day: this Sunday 23rd June from 3-5pm. All welcome to come and visit the new lifeboat ‘Val Adnams’ & take a look inside!

West Cork Methodist Church Family Day: Sat 29th June’24 in Bandon Grammar School from 12 noon to 4:30pm. Stalls, Auction, BBQ, Kids programme, etc. €5pp, max €20 per family for all activities.

Kilgarriffe NS Sports Day

Unfortunately, due to wet weather forecast, our school Sports Day tomorrow is postponed.  It will now take place next Fri 21st June from 10am to 2pm.

 

Zip-It School Tour (2nd to 6th Class)

Next Monday 17th June is School Tour Day at Zip-It in Farran Woods for 2nd to 6th Class. Please note the following details:

  • Arrive in school for 8:50am. Bus leaving at 9am.

  • Uniform NOT needed. Wear runners, comfortable clothes – leggings, tracksuit or shorts (comfortable to wear with harness), t-shirt & sweatshirt.

  • Raincoat in backpack… just in case it rains!

  • Suncream applied in advance please.

  • Bottle water, good packed lunch including a small treat.

  • Long hair to be tied back and in a bun (safety with Zip wires!!)

  • NO Phones or electronic devices allowed.

  • Bus due back at school by 3:45pm

 

Clonakilty Parish Athletics at Ahamilla

Yesterday Wed 12th June, all classes participated in the Clonakilty Parish Athletics at Ahamilla. Well done to you all for excellent participation throughout the day. Congratulations to our prize winners: Emma Daly, Sarah Buttimer, Juliet Welsh, Evie Kingston, Lucy Buttimer, Cillian Barrett, Ruadhán Barrett, Dennis Cahalane & Isaac McInerney in the Flat races. Junior Mixed Relay 1st (Dennis, Juliet, Hannah, Alex) and Senior Mixed Relay 2nd (Gia, David, Eli, Sarah).

 

Our Class Book

Our Class Books for Middle Room (Cookery Book) and Sheila’s class (Story book) have arrived. Children who ordered have been given them today in school.

 

Clonakilty Library Visit

Today Thurs 13th June, 2nd to 6th Class will walk to visit Clonakilty Library to learn about the facilities there that are available to all in our Community. They will also receive information about the ‘Children’s Summer Reading’ incentive, which we hope all our pupils might take part in during their holidays.

 

Junior Room School Tour

Infants & 1st Class had a fantastic day at Grenagh Open Farm last Monday 10th June. Thank you to the parents that helped out on the day.

 

International Day

Well done to all our pupils for putting so much work into their projects, presentations and gathering items and producing food for all the countries on our International Day last Friday 7th June. You were all fantastic. Hope all our visitors in the afternoon enjoyed the event too.

 

Playscape Work Party

Many thanks to all the parents, staff and pupils who came to school last Saturday 8th June and helped in the school garden, yard and field. We now have a much tidier play area and a new ‘Snake’ for all to play on. Well done everyone & thanks to ‘Clonakilty Beef’ for the yummy lunch.

 

Food Dudes

Last Friday 7th June our school received a lovely plaque to display in our school for our excellent participation in the Food Dudes programme and the children’s engagement in it. Thank you to Mrs. Carolyn Buttimer for attending the awards ceremony in Bantry to receive it.

Cycle Day with Ulick

Today is our second fun cycle day with Ulick this term. Looking forward to another fun & action packed cycle day. Many thanks to Ulick.

 

International Day

Tomorrow Friday 7th June we are celebrating all the nationalities within our school community. The children will present their projects to each other throughout the day on each of the 12 countries. Parents are invited to be part of this day from 2-3pm in the school classrooms. All welcome.

Junior Room School Tours

Playscape Work Party

Reminder lots of help needed for our rescheduled work/maintenance day this Sat 8th June’24. Lots of painting, pruning, digging & general tidy up to be done, followed by a BBQ lunch by ‘Clonakilty Beef’ and salad produce fresh from our school garden. Hope to see lots of you there.

Bus Éireann Tickets

Last day tomorrow Fri 7th June’24 for school bus payments for all applicants who qualify for bus places for the 2024/25 school year. The portal will then close for a month & any applications after that will be treated as ‘Late’ & unlikely to get ticket.

Clonakilty Parish Athletics at Ahamilla

Next Wednesday 12th June, the Clonakilty Parish Athletics will take place at Ahamilla (GAA sports rounds), Clonakilty. This Sports involves flat sprint & relay races between the 6 Clonakilty Parish schools and all children will be taking part throughout the day.

Please arrive at Ahamilla between 9-9:15am & collect again to go home by 2pm from Ahamilla. Children who normally travel on the school bus will be brought to & collected from there by their bus. There will be nobody at school that day.

All need to wear shorts, t-shirt, sun hat/cap, tracksuit bottoms, warm hoodie/sweatshirt, coat & sports shoes. Sun cream to be applied before arrival. Please also bring a good healthy packed lunch & drinks.

There will be a small sweet/ ice cream shop there, so a few euros needed if desired!

If any of the children who usually walk to school need transport to Ahamilla Sports grounds, please let your teacher know & we’ll try to organise this for you.

 

Kilgarriffe NS Sports Day

Our school Sports Day will take place next Fri 14th June from 10am to 2pm (weather permitting). If it’s a wet day, our sports will take place on Friday 21st June’24 instead.

All pupils will be competing as part of a team & will need to wear a t-shirt of their team colour on the day. All families are invited to attend & if the weather is good, you are welcome to bring along a ‘picnic’ for lunchtime. Sports day prizes & ‘Student of the Year’ cup will be presented at about 2pm.

 

Food Dudes

Food Dudes has finished but please remember a portion of fruit & veg of choice in lunchboxes everyday going forward. Many thanks to all who made a fruit & veg character throughout last week. If we’ve any more creative kids, please don’t forget to bring in this week or send a photo on What’s Ap to the school mobile.

 

Tidy Towns & Beach clean up days.

Well done to all the pupils who took part in these two days, helping out their community to make our leisure areas all the nicer.

 

Bee & Butterfly Garden

The Junior classroom have been busily planting and growing a ‘Bee & Butterfly’ wildflower area in our school garden. Sunflowers have also been planted in pots & are growing well. These will soon go home with the children to plant and grow in their own garden for the Summer months. Well done to all the little ‘green fingers’.

 

Whist Drive Fundraiser

Whist Drive Fundraiser

Many thanks to Kilgarriffe Parish for having one of their Whist Drive evenings in aid of our school and to all those who helped with Raffle prizes, baking, serving refreshments & clean up, as well as those who attended to play on the night.

Much appreciated.

 

Cork City Sports

Congratulations to all the children on our Cork City Sports teams today who travelled to MTU to take part in the Centenary celebration of the Sports. Every one of the Children were fantastic during a long day, participating in the races & the Centenary Parade along with 300 schools. The Team effort was fabulous and we came home with a bus full of prizes including ‘Best Overall Small School’ for the 2nd year in a row from everyone on the team giving their best. Well done everyone.

Food Dudes

All children have been taking part in the ‘Food Dudes’ programme this week. Hopefully most children have enjoyed the extra fruit & veg each day and others who are ‘less enthusiastic’ have tried and tasted different fruit & veg, to hopefully encourage a few more portions in their diet. Next week we will continue encouraging the children to have at least one portion of fruit and veg in their lunchboxes as part of their snack & lunch every day.

Infants & new pupils will be issued with a special ‘Food Dudes portioned lunchbox for their fruit & veg. Others should already have this at home from previous years.

 

Fruit & Veg Characters 

For a little bit of ‘fruit & veg fun’, we have asked the children to design a small character made from fruit & veg & bring it in to school. Maya & Bodhi brought fab ones today. Well done.

Tidy Towns Community Day

Tomorrow Friday 31st May’24, all the children from 2nd to 6th class and their teachers will take part in a Schools Tidy Towns Community Day. Our school will help tidy up the flower beds and blueberry bushes along the Joe Walsh Walkway during the school day.

 

Farewell

We wish Iris (5th Class) and her family, farewell and good luck as they move to their new home, job and school in Co. Clare this weekend. We have all enjoyed you as part of our school community & wish you all the best for the future.

 

Bank Holiday

Reminder that next Monday 3rd June’24 is a Bank Holiday so there’s NO SCHOOL that day. School reopens Tuesday 4th June’24. Enjoy the long weekend.

 

Mayor’s Visit

The Mayor of Clonakilty, Chris Hinchy will visit our school next Tuesday 4th June.

 

Big Beach Clean up

The Senior classroom (5th& 6th Class) will take part in the Big Beach Clean up at Inchydonney Beach next Wednesday 5th June’24 from 9:30am to 1pm. A bus will drop them back to school.

 

Cycle Day with Ulick

Our second fun cycle day with Ulick is next Thursday 6th June’24 for all classes. Anyone who wishes to bring in their own bicycle & helmet that day is welcome to do so. Many thanks to Ulick for sponsoring this for us.

Reminders Please

As a school staff we would like to please remind parents:

  1.  Drop off time for school children is 8:55am. Children in the yard before this time are NOT being supervised.

  2. School uniform is expected to be worn everyday (denim/navy/black trousers, skirt, leggings or shorts, white t-shirt with collar & named school green sweatshirt.

  3. Children need their own reusable drink bottle in school every day, which they may refill during the day from the tap.

 

Playscape Work Party

This Sat 25th May, we hope to install some new play areas for the children on our school grounds. We are looking for lots of helpers for a few hours starting at 10am. Please wear old clothing and be ready to give a hand. If you’ve a strong shovel and/or a pick axe, please bring those along too!! Thanks in advance.

 

Whist Drive Fundraiser

The Whist Drive in aid of our school is on next Monday 27th May at 8:30pm. We still need a few more small gifts for the raffle and 2 parents to help the teachers serve teas and wash up afterwards between 9-10pm. If you can contribute a raffle prize or help on the evening, please let teachers know.

Thank you to those that are helping provide some baking.

Proceeds from this Whist evening will go to our school to help provide extra resources for all the children.

 

Cork City Sports

Next Thursday 30th May’24 a team of 26 children will travel by bus to the annual Cork City and County Primary School Sports in MUT Bishopstown, Cork. Bus leaves school at 9:30am and will return by 4pm for children to be collected at school.

€15 per person to be sent into school BEFORE next Thursday 30th May please to contribute to the cost of the bus.

First Communion

This Saturday 25th May Ada Marks (2nd Class) will receive her First Holy Communion along with the pupils from Knockskeagh NS in the Parish Church. We wish Ada & her family a very lovely and special day from all at Kilgarriffe NS.

 

Food Dudes

Next week our school takes part in the ‘Food Dudes’ programme organised by Bord Bia to increase awareness amongst children that they should be eating between 5-7 portions of fruit and vegetables per day, to help keep their bodies fit and healthy. Each child receives a different portion of fresh fruit and veg each day to taste & enjoy, as well as watching some related videos. Information letter in schoolbags.

 

School Tours (please note 2 separate days)

Junior Room (Infants & 1st Class) School tour is to Grenagh Open Farm on Monday 10th June. The cost is €20 per child for bus, entrance to farm and ice cream.

Middle & Senior Rooms (2nd to 6th Class) School Tour is to ‘Zip it’ zip-line adventure park at Farran Woods on Monday 17th June’24. The cost is €30 per child for bus, equipment hire and park entrance.

Payments to be sent into school in a named envelope over the next few weeks please.

If anyone is unable to go, please let teachers know as soon as possible so bookings can be adjusted. Thank you.

 

Sensory Garden Visit

Yesterday the Junior classroom and their teachers walked to the Sensory Garden near the Model Railway and had a lovely morning there. They then had no problem walking all the way back up to school while enjoying an ice lolly!!

 

Cycle Day with Ulick

Today Thursday 23rd May, all classes took part in some fun Cycle lessons with Ulick from Bike Wizard and had great fun developing their cycling skills. Thank you Ulick.

Next Cycle day is Thursday 6th June’24 for all classes.

 

Water Safety Webinar

This morning 2nd to 6th Class attended a ‘Water Safety’ Webinar, run again by Cork Sports Partnership to remind the children about the dangers of water coming into the Summer season & how to keep themselves safe.

 

Diocesan Youth Officer visit

Tomorrow Fri 24th May, Hilda, our Diocesan Youth Officer will visit the Senior Classroom for a Social Media presentation.

 

Standardised Tests

Standardised Tests are being administered to 1st -6th class this week and next week in English and Maths. All results will be on children’s end of year school reports.

 

Clonakilty Show Competitions

All Clonakilty Show Art pictures, Computer aided drawing and hand written poems that the children have been working on will be submitted tomorrow Fri 24th May.

Well Being Programme

As part of our school ‘well-being’ programme, incentive awards will be given out at the end of each week. This month the awards are for Maths improvement and effort.

Last weeks Maths awards were presented to: Sarah (6thClass), Arsenii (5th class), Maya (3rd Class), Evan (2nd Class), Jakub (1st Class) and Xavi (Jun Infants). Well done.

Standardised Tests

Standardised Tests will be administered to 1st -6th class over the next few weeks in English and Maths. All results will be on children’s end of year school reports.

 

Cycle Day with Ulick

Next Thursday 23rd May, all classes will take part in some fun Cycle lessons with Ulick from Bike Wizard. He will have lots of bikes & helmets with him, but if anyone wishes to bring in their own helmet or bicycle for the day, they are welcome to do so.

 

Bike Week Cycle Safety Webinar

Last Monday 13th May, 2nd to 6th Class took part in a ‘Cycle Safety’ webinar by Cork Sports Partnership as part of Bike Week. All learned lots about safe bike checks as well as safety whilst cycling on the roads.

 

Water Safety Webinar

Next Wednesday 22nd May, 2nd to 6th Class will attend a ‘Water Safety’ Webinar, run again by Cork Sports Partnership.

 

Diocesan Youth Officer visit

Next Fri 24th May, Hilda, our Diocesan Youth Officer will visit the Senior Classroom.

 

Clon Show Competitions

Clon Show will be in the Show grounds in Clonakilty on Sunday 9th June’24. All classes will be busy producing Art pictures, Computer aided drawing and hand written poems to enter in the Schools competitions. These must be completed and submitted by next Fri 24th May. Playscape Work Party

Reminder that on Sat 25th May, we hope to install some new play areas for the children on our school grounds. We are looking for lots of helpers for a few hours starting at 10am. Please wear old clothing and be ready to give a hand. If you’ve a strong shovel and/or a pick axe, please bring those along too!! Thanks in advance.

Board of Management Update for Parents

The Board discussed the results of the After-school Care survey completed by parents. 12 families have indicated interest in the service. This is related to 18 children attending between 1 and 5 days per week. Many thanks to the parents who participated. The Board are taking these findings into consideration.

The Board would also like to convey best wishes to Marleen de Witt as she retires this June. Marleen has been involved with Kilgarriffe NS since 1998, working as a part-time secretary, recorder teacher and computer teacher over the years. We wish her a very enjoyable retirement.

Healthy Lunch boxes

It has come to our attention recently that quite a lot of children are coming to school without eating breakfast and others with snacks instead of a good healthy lunch. Please be reminder that our school has a ‘healthy eating policy’ and children need quality food including fruit and veg in order to be able to concentrate & learn in school. On Fridays, lunchboxes may include a ‘small treat’.

Whist Drive Fundraiser

Kilgarriffe parish are kindly running one of their monthly ‘Whist Drives’ in aid of our school on Monday 27th May at 8:30pm. As a school we need to provide some baking to serve to competitors, some raffle prizes and some volunteers to help with serving refreshments and tidy up afterwards. Pirates Workshop

All classes will participate in a ‘Pirates’ workshop this Friday 10th May with Anthony Galvin from Heritage in Schools, during the school day.

 

Cookbook Publication

The middle classroom (2nd to 4th Class) are in the process of producing their very own class cookery book, from all their cookery classes including many recipes & photographs. They are the authors and they can have it printed and published like a real cookbook by one of the school book companies. Order forms will be in middle room homework file today.

If you would like to order a cookbook for your household or for a gift for someone, please fill in order form & return with payment by next Monday 13th May, as orders must be submitted at the time of sending the script for publication.

The children are currently working in groups developing a project about different countries that are represented in our school. We are holding an International Day on Friday 7th June’24 when the children will present their projects on each of the 12 countries. County Final SPAR FAI Primary 5’s

Congratulations to the girls’ soccer team who competed in the county finals of the Spar FAI Primary 5s soccer tournament in Musgrave Park last Monday 22nd April.

They were fantastic and showed great skill, team support and sportsmanship throughout their games. Drew, won and lost games, finishing high up in the tournament. Well done.

Many thanks to the parents and staff who helped and supported them and especially to Caroline for their coaching sessions.

 

Bishop Colton’s Visit 

Bishop Paul Colton visited our school last Monday 22nd April, as part of his Silver Jubilee Programme of visits to parishes and schools in the Diocese. We all greatly enjoyed his visit, chats, planted an oak tree and ate cake!!

Now that the weather is improving, children are welcome to wear navy or black shorts, skorts or skirts as part of their school uniform. The length of these needs to be appropriate for school classroom wear, so not too short!!

Middle Room Culture Outing

On Tuesday April'24 2nd to 4th Class will walk to the gallery in Asna Square to see work by local artists, including the work of Will Dahm, an artist that illustrated the book cover of 'Bendigo Gold', the class novel we are currently reading. They will also visit the Regional Museum and look at local historical artifacts while searching for answers to our quiz sheet. Weather permitting they will eat lunch in Bennet's Field and enjoy their biodiverse garden.

Board of Management Update

At the Board of Management meeting in March, the new Board spent some time discussing priorities for the school’s development. The Board would like to enhance play facilities in the school grounds and are inviting interested parents to come along to a work party in the school on Saturday 25th May at 10am to begin work on a Playscape. The Board also wishes to extend congratulations to the girls’ soccer team on reaching the county finals of the Spar FAI Primary 5s this year.

Next Monday 18th March is a Bank Holiday for St. Patrick’s Day. School closed that day.

 

Swimming Lessons

Swimming lessons for all classes will start immediately after the Easter holidays on Monday 8th, 15th, 22nd, 29th April 13th & 20th May from 2-3pm. Lessons will take place at the Clonakilty Park Leisure Centre. The cost of these lessons is €50 per child for 6 weekly lessons including bus fare to the pool from school. Please can this payment be sent into school immediately or by next Fri 22nd March before the Easter holidays if at all possible, in a named envelope. All children are encouraged to participate, as this is an important part of our Physical Education curriculum and an important life skill to learn.

 

On swimming days, children will travel by bus from school at 1:30pm to the Clonakilty Park Leisure Centre. All children will need swim wear, hat, goggles & a towel. Infants may wear their swimwear under their uniform coming to school (don’t forget underwear in swim bag!). Children are to be collected from the Clonakilty Park Leisure Centre at 3pm after swimming. School bus children will travel home on bus as usual. Parents of younger children may arrive early at 2:50pm to help their child with dressing.

 

Easter Holidays

Reminder school closes next Friday 22nd March at 12noon for Easter holidays. School reopens Monday 8th April’23.

 

Easter Egg Hunt

On Fri 22nd Mar’24 all classes will take part in an Easter Egg Hunt in the playground as part of our Easter celebrations. Every child will receive some chocolate eggs.

World Book Day

Today we celebrate ‘World Book Day’ with all children and staff invited to dress up as one of their favourite book characters for the day. Well done to all, fantastic creativity today!

 

Engineers Week

Engineer’s week is in progress as all our ‘budding engineers’ have fun taking part in lots of structural and creative engineering type STEM challenges and tasks throughout the week.

 

Spar Inter Schools Soccer Tournament

Well done to the Boys Soccer team who travelled to Blarney last Friday. They enjoyed the event, participated superbly & did very well getting to the semi final. Congrats to all.

 

Seachtaine na Gaeilge

Next week leading up to Lá le Pádraig is Seachtaine na Gaeilge. Children will be participating in lots of Irish language and cultural activities throughout the week.

Polar Explorers Workshop

Polar Explorer workshop last Friday 22nd Feb with Anthony Galvin (Heritage in Schools) was a great success. The children got to see gear that is worn and hear stories from Anthony’s own Polar Expeditions, as well as hearing the stories of famous Irish explorers in the past such as Tom Crean.

 

Grease the Musical

Today Thursday 29th Feb all children from 2nd to 6th Class travelled by bus to Bandon Grammar School to see their production of ‘Grease the Musical’ which was greatly enjoyed by all.

 

Spar Inter Schools Soccer Tournament

Tomorrow Fri 1st March’24 the Boys Soccer team will travel to Blarney to compete in this tournament.  Please be in school early as the bus leaves Kilgarriffe NS at 8:45am.
