Each family was issued an invoice at the beginning of September, with the amount they owed & were asked to please have payment in full by midterm.

Please can payments be sent into school in a sealed named envelope ASAP, as the school management will not be in a position to organise any further extra curricular activities until payment is received.

Please note that those unpaid will not be able to avail of this personal insurance cover should they need to until its paid for.

If any family needs to stretch this payment into smaller instalments, please contact Mrs. Hanbidge to set this up.

Thank you to all who have already contributed in full.

Playscape Development

Over the midterm break, our ‘Playscape’ area was further developed with the construction of a gravel pit & tyre balance play area. The children will help to paint this over the next few weeks, on sunny afternoons, to add some colour to its completion. This was funded by some of the money raised by our Parents Association Bingo event last February, so a big ‘thank you’ to all who were involved in that.

Used Clothing Collection Fundraiser

Our ‘Used Clothing Collection’ was collected yesterday, Wednesday 4th November’20. Thank you to everyone who contributed. Money from this fundraiser will be used to further develop our ‘Play Scape’ & other play areas in the school outdoor play areas.

Parents/guardians now have an opportunity to buy packs of 10 of your child’s own Christmas card for €8 per pack.

If you wish to buy them, all you need to do, is fill in the order form, enclose payment and return to school in the bag provided by Friday 13th Nov’20 at the latest.

Ordered cards should be back within 10 days maximum.

Christmas Annuals

Order forms were sent home yesterday in schoolbags. If you wish to order, please complete order form & attach correct money (€2 each), before returning to your child’s class teacher.

Christmas Drama

Unfortuately due to the ongoing Covid 19 pandemic and the current restrictions, we are sad to say that it will not be possible for us to hold our usual annual Christmas drama production on stage with all the children this year. Hopefully later in the school year, we may be able to put together some type of performance…………

Spellings for Me Programme

This year we are using a new spelling programme with all the children from 2nd to 6th Class called ‘Spellings for Me’.

This is an individualised spellings programme which has both an online and offline element and creates a completely individualised spellings programme for each pupil at their own unique level & need.

During the first few weeks of the programme, time was spent online where the children completed spelling tests and progressed through each level.

Once the child got 96 words wrong they were locked out of spelling tests. These 96 incorrect words go into their ‘Learning Words’ bank. After the initial testing phase online, each child has their own individualised set of learning words which are separated into 12 words per week. These have been printed, cut out & put into their workbook.

The children now followed an 8 week block of work in their workbook to practise their individualised spelling lists.  After 8 weeks they will complete a learning words test (online), return to the online element and then the workbook etc.

Please can parents ensure that their children are learning these words each week as there is NO LONGER A WEEKLY ENGLISH SPELLING TEST to check until the end of the 8 weeks. Lots of repetition is needed to ensure these spelling are learned correctly and stay in the child’s long term memory.

Pupil Congratulations

Congratulations to Matthew Buttimer (6th Class), Victor Abbott (6th Class) and David Abbott (3rd Class) on last weeks’ success as part of the winning U12’s Ballinascathy GAA football team, who won the league final against Ahan Gaels last Thursday 24th.

Welcome Back

As we start a new school year, we would like to extend a very warm ‘welcome back’ to everyone after our extended closure. We hope that everyone had an enjoyable summer and are ready for the challenges of the new school year ahead.

Due to Covid 19 our school routines are a bit different for all classes, but as we strive to keep everyone as safe as possible, we will also try to keep everything as normal as possible for our pupils.

New Pupils and Families

Welcome to the 8 new pupils & their families who has joined our school.

Connor, Bodhi, Ada & Rebeka in Junior Infants, Ruadhán in 1st Class, Andrei in 4th Class and Addison & India in 6th Class. We hope that everyone will help them quickly adjust and integrate into our school life.

Our Newsletter

Our school newsletter is issued every Thursday & displayed on our notice board outside school as well as on our website www.kilgarriffens.ie

A mobile phone version is available for your convenience.

This is our main way of communicating & informing families what’s happening in school, so please read it each week!!

In it we hope to keep all families regularly informed about:

● As many aspects of school life as possible.

● Any student achievements and/or successes both from within and outside

school, so let us know when they happen, otherwise we may not know!

● Information from our Parent’s Association and/or Board of Management

(BOM) that they may wish to inform parents of.

● Latest Covid 19 updates relevant to schools.

If anyone wishes to contribute news or information to our newsletter please submit via text or What’s Ap to our school mobile, or by email to kilgarriffens.office@gmail.com before 3pm on a Wednesday and we will do our best to include it in the next day issue.

Please can the book rental be paid ASAP & if possible by the end of this week.

Please can all other extras be paid by midterm break at the end of October’20. There is no charge at the moment for swimming lessons until we see if this will be possible later in the school year. Please send cash/cheque in a named envelope. Thank you.

Library Books & Readers

All children were given readers & library books to take home when school closed in March. These are both expensive & part of packs, so we would really appreciate them all to be returned immediately. Many thanks to all who have already done so.

School Sweatshirts

Please could you ensure that all your children’s school sweatshirts are CLEARLY NAMED.

Once they are taken off in school, they are all the same and it’s impossible to know whose jumper it is.

Drop-off and collection of children

Reminder that we operate a ‘Drive in drop off / collection’ system in the morning & at home times in the afternoon.

At home time, please allow the buses to exit first at 3pm. The children travelling on the buses will be let out of school first, so the buses can depart quickly & easily, thus allowing plenty of space for collecting cars to drive in, collect & drive on out from school again.

Cars need to drive in from the hill above the school & exit out the lower part of the car park. If you need to park or queue for drop off/ collection, please do so above the school on the left hand side coming down the hill. Thank you for your co-operation with this to ensure the safety of all children coming to & departing from school. The few car park spaces outside the school wall are for teachers cars only.

School opening hours

Our school officially opens from 8:55am to 3pm. All pupils are expected to be in school to start class by 9.15am. Junior Infants finish at 1pm until Fri 11th Sept after which all Infant collection will be 2pm.

After 9.15am the school doors are secured for the safety & security of the children and late arrivals will have to wait for the doors to be released again. This causes disruption to classes that have started. A big effort to be ‘on time’ is greatly appreciated.

Due to Covid 19 restrictions Parents/ visitors calling to school during the day, must make an appointment to do so beforehand,

via the school mobile (083 0658096).

No one must enter the school building without prior permission & must wear a face covering.

Please do not drop children at school before 8:55am and always ensure that a member of staff is there and your child has gone through the school gate, before departing.

Absent Notes

Please remember that absent notes are required on each occasion that a child is out of school for a day or longer. Please ensure that this is sent in to the class teacher on the day that your child returns to school.

Parent/ Teacher Communication

As much as possible, please can communication be made to teachers through messages on our school mobile. If a private, or more serious discussion is needed, please request a meeting with the Principal and/or class teacher and an appropriate time can be arranged, usually after school hours. Thank you for your co-operation.

Healthy Lunch Boxes

Children are encouraged to bring a ‘Healthy Lunch’ to school including some daily fruit and/or veg. Please keep sugary treats to a minimum.

Unfortunately food cannot be reheated in school this year & any cutlery required for your child to eat with, must be provided in their lunch box.

Reminder that chewing gum & fizzy drinks are not permitted in school. Crisps & popcorn are also discouraged as they cause extra mess!!

To help preserve our environment, please can children use reusable drink bottles instead of a disposable plastic bottle every day!!

Indoor/ Outdoor Shoes

To help with the workload of keeping the school clean, all children are asked to have a clean pair of indoor shoes for use in the classrooms. These will stay in school & be stored on shoe racks to keep mud level coming inside to a minimum. These shoes can be light canvas, trainers, crocs etc. but must have a proper sole, so they are safe & will not slip on floors. Please ensure child can easily put them on & off by themselves. Thank you to those who have already brought them in.

Well done & Thank You

Thank you to all parents & children who have made a huge effort this week to adhere strictly to the new regulations & routines we have had to impose due to the ongoing threat of Covid 19 in our community, both inside & outside our school. Please continue to do so, as we all adjust to the ‘new normal’. The staff & children are all happy to be back in school & we would like it to stay that way.

Please do not send your child into school if they are:

  • unwell

  • displaying any Covid 19 symptoms

  • have been in contact with anyone displaying Covid 19 symptoms

  • are awaiting Covid 19 test results or anyone else in the family

  • have been abroad in the last 14 days

Stay Safe everyone.
