Week 30 (06/05/22)

Swimming Lessons

Swimming lessons started last Tuesday 3rd May in the Clonakilty Park Leisure Centre.

The children all had a great time, but our instructors all felt that our groups are too big, considering the large number ofnon-swimmers & beginners that we have, due to lack of swim opportunities over the past 2 years.

From next Tuesday, the leisure centre is giving us a longer time slot & we are splitting the group into two halves toensure that all groups are much smaller. This will allow the children more water space, less noise and more individual attention

to learn to swim & improve their stroke technique.

Like last week, all children will be taken to the pool by bus and are to be collected from the Leisure Centre at 3pm, NOT from school.

An adult will need to come into the lobby of the leisure centre to sign out the child/children they are collecting.

An infant parent may need to go into the changing area to assist their child with dressing.

Access will not be allowed to changing area before 2:55pm.

The school bus will collect the children normally on it from the leisure centre.

If your child is NOT travelling home on this bus, please inform the bus driver on Tuesday morning.

Welcome to our new pupils

This week we welcomed 4 new pupils into our school from the Ukraine. Slava in 1st class, Slava in 2nd class, Pavlo in 3rd class and Mykyta in 4th class. The boys are all settling in well and no doubt everyone will ensure they are made feel very welcome both in our school & the Clonakilty community.

Rest in Peace Vivienne

It’s with great sadness that we heard of Ms. Vivienne Roycroft’s passing this week after a short illness. Vivienne was a Primary school teacher and Principal of Abbeystrewry National School in Skibbereen for many, many years. After her retirement she visited our school on many occasions to help prepare our 6th Class candidates for their Religious Education exams as part of the Bandon Grammar Scholarship.

Our thoughts are with Vivienne’s extended family and especially with Ms. Marleen, our computer teacher, who was a great friend and carer to Vivienne for many years.

Week 19 (27/01/22)

‘Dragon Days’ Premiere

Our ‘premiere viewing’ for the children took place yesterday at the Clonakilty Park Cinema and the children had a ‘blast’… red carpet, balloons, RTE, paparazzi, popcorn as well as their fabulous style, sense of fun and willingness to participate in it all.

Then of course there was the movie/ drama itself, in which the children were the main celebrities. Well done to each and every child and of course many thanks to all our great parents who got the children there in ‘style’ and on time, helped with lifts for the younger ones and provided lots of ‘goodies’ for staff and children back at school. Without doubt the children had a wonderful day and a very special experience.

All our staff helped with the preparations but a special ‘thank you’ needs to go to Múinteoir Sheila who initiated the whole idea. She did all the research, contacts & final organisation for all that was needed, from signage, balloons, red carpet, cinema, chauffeur with special car, to photographers, newspapers and TV media, all of which made the event so special.

Many, many thanks Sheila and such a pity you ended up missing it all due to ill health.

We all wish you a speedy recovery and hope to have you back with us really soon.

Rev. Kingsley (Spielberg)

Huge thanks to Kingsley for his amazing filming, editing, special effects and endless encouragement, patience and endurance to produce the final production of ‘Dragon Days’ for us all.

Hopefully everyone, in one way or another, has got to view and enjoy it.

Many thanks to the parents who organised a special presentation for Kingsley at the ‘Premiere,’ as a token of all our appreciation ….. even a ‘Dragon Cake’ which looked amazing & captured all the children’s attention.

Media Coverage of ‘Dragon Days’ Premiere

We have received amazing media interest of this event in the last few days and they have all followed through in the last few hours,

to really put our little school ‘on the map’!!!

Not only did we manage to get RTE to attend and spend a large part of the morning with us at the Park Cinema, but we got a lengthy appearance on the Children’s RTE News2Day yesterday afternoon, followed by a shorter but significant mention on the National 6 One news at 6pm. (available to see again on RTE player)

The Southern Star had our ‘up-coming event’ on their news feed (southernstar.ie) last Monday and we will be in their newspaper today (Thursday). The Bandon Opinion and West Cork People will also give our ‘Premiere’ a mention this week, so keep a look out for these.

Sunday Matinee Showing of ‘Dragon Days’

This Sunday 30th January’21, there will be a Matinee showing of ‘Dragon Days’ in Kilgarriffe Church Clonakilty (eircode P85 DV27) at 3pm. It will be open to everyone who wishes to come and free of charge. Limiting Covid restrictions have been lifted for churches, so families are all welcome, but will be encouraged to sit together. The church has big screens, plenty of seating and an excellent digital sound system, which will lift the sound and make it a special occasion for all those who would have loved to have attended the cinema, or who wish to see it again along with their extended family. All welcome to come and enjoy together.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Kaja Kicinska (6th Class) who was recently spotted in the Southern Star newspaper with her Clonakilty U14’s ladies rugby club team, on their historic night of Clon reds v Clo greens match. Well done Kaja.

Our ‘premiere viewing’ for the children will take place next Wednesday 26th January’22 at the Clonakilty Park Cinema. This will be a ‘red carpet’ event and the children are invited to dress in their finest entire!!
